Antwerp - Kallo Lock and Zandvliet Lock
Given that the Kallo lock is a very important lock and the roller rails of the four lock doors needed replacing, the option was taken to carry out the renovation works with the help of a dry tank which allowed the tracks in the door openings and door chambers to be replaced under atmospheric conditions without interrupting marine traffic. This project comprises the construction of the dry tank (300t diving bell of heavy steel in which the works were carried out) and the replacement of the tracks. The project for the Zandvliet Lock involved the construction of fitting blocks (56,000 kilograms) for the caisson previously used for the repair of the Kallo Lock, following which the caisson was installed and used to remove and/or renew the existing rails, roller wheels and bottom runners of the gates. At the same time, repairs were carried out to the degraded expansion joints in the lock walls. While the works were being carried out inside the caisson the lock was out of service for shipping.
